99 men versus 100 women: the biology of the sex ratio in NL! Podcast NPO Radio 1

Voor de Podcast 'Alledaagse Vragen' werd ik geïnterviewd over de biologie van de geslachtsverhouding tussen mannen en vrouwen. Hoe kan het dat deze vrijwel precies 50/50 is in Nederland? Schommelt deze verhouding wel eens en zo ja: hoe gaat de natuur hiermee om? En hoe zit het ook alweer met het overerven van geslachtschromosomen, X en Y? Ik vond het een eer geïnterviewd te zijn door de BNNVara / NPO Radio 1 om op deze vragen antwoord te geven in de vorm van een - hopelijk verfrissende - biologieles, waarin gelukkig ook aandacht werd bested aan het verschil tussen geslacht en gender. Disclaimer: het interview was voornamelijk gericht op de biologie van sex chromosomen. Hoe die biologie zich vertaalt van evolutie en genetica, naar geslacht, naar gender - dat ligt bij de mens natuurlijk in heel veel gevallen veel ingewikkelder dan bij de meeste andere diersoorten en is bij ons niet zo zwart op wit! Het is belangrijk dat ook hier aandacht voor wordt gegenereerd en ik hoopte dat ik dat toch kon doen in dit korte interview, ondanks dat de nadruk lag op het 'klassieke', biologische man-vrouw systeem. Ik ben zeker ook op de wetenschap hiervan in gegaan, echter konden de journalisten slechts fragmenten uit het interview gebruiken in verband met de beperkte hoeveelheid tijd en bleef mijn verhaal dus bij het standaard man-vrouw / XX-XY systeem.

For the  "Everyday Questions" Podcast of the Dutch NPO Radio 1 / BNN Vara broadcasting media I was interviewed regarding the biology of the sex ratio between men and women in the Netherlands. You can listen to the podcast (6 min, Dutch only) through the green button above!

Disclaimer: The interview mainly focused on the biology of sex chromosomes. How this biology translates from evolution and genetics, to sex, to gender - that is, of course, in many cases, much more complicated in humans compared to other animals and is thus not so black and white! It is important that more people are aware of this and I hoped that I was able to hint at this during the short interview, despite the fact that the emphasis was on the 'classic' biological male-female system.

I certainly also discussed the science behind this, but the journalists could only use certain fragments from the interview due to time constraints and thus my story entailed only the standard male-female / XX-XY system in the end.
