" Survival of the failure " - featured in Leiden Science Magazine

Enkele maanden geleden mocht ik voor het Symposium 'Populair Wetenschappelijk Schrijven' een gastlezing geven voor eerstejaars Biologie studenten in Leiden. Het symposium was onderdeel van een wetenschapscommunicatie vak en ik vond het een spannende uitdaging om de studenten een verhaal te vertellen wat aan de ene kant ging over mijn visie en aanpak op het gebied van 'scicomm', en wat aan de andere kant ging over mijn onderzoek bij het Wielstra lab. Maar ik was niet de enige die voor een uitdaging stond!

De studenten mochten namelijk kiezen over wie van de sprekers ze een populair wetenschappelijk artikel zouden schrijven om het vak af te ronden. De beste stukjes zouden naar Leiden Science Magazine worden gestuurd voor eventuele publicatie. Dana Lefèbvre was één van de studenten die koos een stukje te schrijven over mijn presentatie - wat ik een hele eer vond! Zij won deze 'challenge' met haar leuke verhaal over mijn onderzoek en haar artikel is dan ook gepubliceerd in Leiden Science Magazine! Onder andere schreef ze het volgende: " For a long time scientists have wondered why only a fraction of the laid Triturus-eggs actually hatch. An evolutionary defect seems to be the cause. The DNA of Triturus is full of mistakes."

English summary: A few months ago I presented during the Symposium 'Popular Science Writing', which was a part of a course of first-year biology students in Leiden. I was excited to be able to tell a story that was about my approach and vision on 'scicomm' on the one hand , and about my research at the Wielstra lab on the other. The students would pick one of the presenter's talk to use as inspiration for their essay and if they wrote a winning article, it would be submitted to Leiden Science Magazine for potential publication. Dana Lefèbvre was one of the students who wrote about my research (I was super honored!) and her article was published by Leiden Science Magazine!
