Job promotion! From PhD to postdoc

Met het nieuwe jaar begint voor mij ook een nieuwe functie, namelijk die van postdoctoraal onderzoeker (een hele mond vol! Daarom wordt het veelal afgekort tot 'postdoc'). Dit omdat mijn PhD contract, inclusief een verlenging van drie maanden in verband met COVID-19-gerelateerde vertragingen, afliep.

Een PhD doen kost veel moeite. Kortom, het kost jaren en jaren van je leven om slechts een handvol onderzoeksvragen te beantwoorden (als je geluk hebt)! Hoewel ik nu, na vier jaar en drie maanden, mijn proefschrift nog wel moet afronden en verdedigen, mag ik de komende tijd al als postdoc in hetzelfde team van onderzoekers (bij het Wielstra lab) aan de slag. Ik zal er verder werken aan mijn lopende, wetenschappelijke projecten. Zet je dus schrap voor meer amfibieën- en DNA-spam in 2024!

PS: Wat óók alvast leuk is om te melden (en hierover later meer) is dat ik deze functie in deeltijd uit ga voeren. Dat houdt in dat ik meer tijd over ga hebben voor bijklussen via Wild DNA. Bekijk hier alvast de gloednieuwe versie van de Wild DNA pagina.

PPS: De bijgevoegde figuur heb ik gebruikt om dit bericht verder op te leuken. Na veel optimaliseren en verfijnen, ben ik op dit plaatje te zien als postdoc, aan het werk, terwijl ik salamanders in het veld bestudeer. Of tenminste, volgens DALL-E3. DALL-E begrijpt niet veel van de daadwerkelijke watersalamandersoorten die ik bestudeer, zo lijkt het... Noch weet DALL-E hoe ik eruit zie, want de AI mag geen fotografische informatie van een echt persoon gebruiken om zijn afbeeldingen op te baseren. Ondanks dat dit dus totaal niet op mij lijkt (!) - en ondanks dat de salamanders een beetje afwijkend zijn - vond ik dit tóch een schattig beeld om te delen.

With the start of this new year, I was promoted from PhD candidate to postdoctoral researcher (generally shortened to 'postdoc'). This is because my PhD contract, including a three-month extension that was given due to COVID-19-related delays, has expired.

Doing a PhD takes a lot of effort. In short, it will take years and years of your life to answer just a handful of research questions (if you are lucky)! Although I still have to complete and defend my dissertation after four years and three months, I will already be able to continue working as a postdoc in the same team of researchers (at the Wielstra lab) for the coming time. I will keep working on my ongoing scientific projects. So brace yourself for more amphibian- and DNA-spam in 2024!

PPS: I attached a figure to draw attention to this blog post. After optimizing and refining, this image shows me working as a postdoc while studying salamanders in the field. Or at least, according to DALL-E3 that is what this would look like. DALL-E does not understand much about the actual newt species I study, so it seems... Nor does DALL-E know what I look like, because the AI is not allowed to use photographic information of a real person to base its images on. So, despie the fact that this doesn't look like me at all (!) - and even though the salamanders are a bit off - I still thought this was a cute image for sharing!
